Rougham-based Crazy Golf company, PutterFingers entered a team in the British Mini Golf Association's (BMGA) British Open event last weekend (13th and 14th September), held at the Strokes Adventure Golf Course in Margate.
Comprised of four players (Chris Dashper, Andrew Denny, Richard Standen, Matt Willingham), the PutterFingers team members each played four rounds of 18-hole Mini Golf on the Saturday. Players scoring an average of 44 or less per round (176 strokes in total) would make the 'Cut' to play on the Sunday.
Despite a particularly impressive performance from Andrew, who scored a marvellous 41 in his second round, none of the PutterFingers team made the cut and had to bow out gracefully at the end of the first day.The trophy was lifted by Swedish player, Mattias Ståhl, who scored an incredible 34 stroke average across his eight rounds (playing 4 rounds on Saturday and 4 rounds on Sunday). That means he was consistently averaging less than two shots per hole. In fact Mattias scored no less than 22 aces in the competition!
Mini Golf is a very strong sport on the European mainland, where players can play fulltime with company sponsorship. In fact, a strong contingent from Sweden, Germany, Finland and the Czech Republic were present - and these players dominated the top of the table at the weekend. There is talk of Mini Golf being an exhibition sport at the 2012 Olympics, with fully fledged Olympic status at some point in the future.
